Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital is affiliated with two Medical Schools in Dublin. They are Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and University College Dublin. In any one year, up to five hundred undergraduate medical students will come to Cappagh for their Musculo-Skeletal module, which may be the only exposure to orthopaedic medicine and surgery they get during their five years of medical training. The students receive daily lectures in the classroom and are then allocated to wards, theatre and out patients departments where they are supervised by Cappagh medical staff and obtain clinical experience.
Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital has developed relationships with many university medical schools throughout the world and has regularly hosted clinical attachments for overseas students from USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, New Zealand and Australia.
Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital is accredited internationally for Higher Surgical Training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, by the Joint Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, and is regularly inspected to ensure the hospital maintains international standards of education and training. We are accredited to train the largest number of trainee orthopaedic surgeons in Ireland, and accredited for Fellowship training in spine, upper limb, lower limb/Arthroplasty and Sports Surgery.
Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital participates as an Examinations Centre for the Joint Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland in the Final Professional – Exit – Examinations for Senior Specialist Registrars in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. Because of our facility and location we regularly host the largest of these examinations in the British Isles. International, eminent Surgeon trainers travel to Cappagh to examine candidates and are exposed to Cappagh’s unique environment. Many have subsequently returned to Cappagh to provide teaching to our Trainee Orthopaedic Surgeons on “The-State-of-the-Art” in their own specialty interest.
Twice yearly, Cappagh Hospital hosts international leading experts from around the world, who are specifically invited to spend two days in Cappagh. During this time, they examine patients and impart their clinical expertise. They also present two dedicated invited lectures . Over the years, Cappagh has hosted the most famous and innovative orthopaedic surgeons internationally.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital provides teaching for commercial bodies, Engineering companies, technical medical companies and for Researchers, Designers and Developers in private industry and provides exposure to latest techniques in surgery which provide information for the advancement of technologies and medical device design in surgery and for orthopaedic surgery in particular.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital is affiliated with Dublin City University for research and development in areas of Sports and Exercise in Health and this association has led to the presentation and publication of several theses for the award of Higher Degrees in Surgery at Master, Doctor and PhD level.
